Ugh. Okay, even though I am amused by the fact that Jonathan Toews constantly rocks the ability to stay out of the limelight, a lot of this video touches upon wider fucking trends that really upset me.
Warning, a lot of this post is me having like, the OPPOSITE of squee and if that’s not what you’re feeling right now you should probably skip it. But after debating with myself for a bit, I decided I didn’t want to just let this go by :\
I want to acknowledge that being successful/driven/good at what you do is generally an attractive thing. It’s definitely something I’m attracted to (as anyone who’s heard me react to Geno’s highlight reels can attest). However, women aren’t interchangeable, they aren’t *items* where success gives you automatic access to their vaginas. The idea that having the Cup entitles Patrick Kane to <i>anything</i> besides acknowledgement that he’s good at hockey is gross and upsetting and something I judge the fuck out of the TMZ cameramen for suggesting and him for engaging with.
If Kaner found someone who was attracted to his success/the fact that he won the cup/whatever and slept with him, bully for him. That entitles him to absolutely nothing else, and the assumption that he is says disgusting things about how women are viewed and the privilege we extend to our sportstars.
Yeah, exactly.
I think it’s also important to point out that there might be girls who would sleep with Kaner for being young and hot (??) and a superstar, girls who would get kind of caught up in the excitement of the whole thing. And there is nothing wrong with those girls. Nothing. What’s wrong is the gross assumption that Kaner’s entitled to that somehow.
I’m a big fan of casual sex (in theory, I’ve been in a relationship so long that I almost can’t remember what having casual sex even feels like), and I think it’s really important not to shame girls who wanna have one night stands, or who wanna fuck hockey players or whatever. BUT. Even if Kane got laid a whole lot off the back of that win, the idea that sex comes as a package deal with it, that’s really gross. No one just deserves sex because they’re a sports star (or a movie star or a rock star, for that matter). No one just deserves sex, period.
Also - and ugh, I’m not being a Kaner apologist here, because let’s face it, he can be a dick - did he look kind of…out of it and confused in this clip? He looks like he’s got no idea what’s going on, and that’s kind of a problem too. The culture that parades these young stars around and tells them ‘look, you can have money and fame and girls and booze and whatever you want, just as long as you perform for us and give us a show’, that’s really fucked up as well.
